What is Cowboy Action Shooting™?

""The Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) is an international organization created to preserve and promote the sport of Cowboy Action Shooting™. SASS endorses regional matches conducted by affiliated clubs, as well as The World Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting. As an organization, SASS makes known rules and procedures to ensure safety and consistency in all Matches, and also works to protect its members’ 2nd Amendment rights. All SASS members share a common interest in preserving the history of the Old West, as well as competitive shooting. One of the unique aspects of SASS approved Cowboy Action Shooting™ is the requirement placed on costuming. Each participant is required to adopt a shooting alias appropriate to a character or profession of the late 19th century, a Hollywood western star, or an appropriate character from fiction. Their costume is then developed accordingly. Many event participants gain more enjoyment from the costuming aspect of our sport than from the shooting competition, itself. Regardless of a SASS member’s individual area of interest, SASS events provide regular opportunities for fellowship and fun with like-minded folks and families.

Choosing an Alias

Every SASS member is required to select a shooting alias representative of a character or profession from the Old West or the western film genre. Your alias may not in anyway duplicate or easily be confused with any other member’s alias. The following guideline should help you in choosing an alias: Your alias must be printable before a wide audience. No duplications are permitted. If it sounds the same, it is the same. Adding “too,” “II,” etc., is not acceptable. “Ranger” could become “Texas Ranger” but not “The Ranger.” “John Henry Chisum” could be modified to “Jack Chisum” but not “John H. Chisum” or “Jon Henry Chisum.” Historical names may not be modified to make them different. “Wyatt Earp” and “Marshal Wyatt Earp” are considered the same. The SASS Alias Registry changes daily. Feel free to search the current alias list then telephone or fax the SASS office to confirm the availability of your alias choice. Be creative and good luck!

Old West Firearms

Cowboy Action Shooting is a multi-faceted shooting sport in which contestants compete with firearms typical of those used in the taming of the Old West: single action revolvers, pistol caliber lever action rifles, and old time shotguns. The shooting competition is staged in a unique, characterized, “Old West” style. It is a timed sport in which shooters compete for prestige on a course of different shooting stages. Each scenario, as they are called, features an array of situations, many based on famous incidents or movies scenes, in which the shooters must test their mettle against steel targets.

Who Is Paden’s Posse?

""Paden’s Posse is an established SASS Club that was organized approximately 28 years ago. Our cowboy club is a dedicated group of cowboys and cowgirls. We are committed to being safe, having fun and following SASS guidelines. Our intention is to put on a great match each month. We encourage families to attend and participate. We encourage members to respect the traditions of the Old West and we never forget that SAFETY IS ALWAYS first. Paden’s Posse is the second oldest SASS club on the East Coast. Its members started in Salisbury, Maryland and shot there for 14 years. We shot 11 years in Seaford, Delaware and moved to Bridgeville Rifle & Pistol Club in September, 2011. We love when visitors show up, and we can’t wait to show you how this works. New shooters are always welcome. Periodically we offer a “New Shooters” Clinic to help you feel comfortable with the SASS guidelines, and offer tips and tools for a safe, fun shooting experience. We shoot the 3rd Sunday of every month. Set up begins at 7:30 AM. Registration is 8:00 – 8:45 AM. The safety meeting is at 9:00 AM and shooting begins right after the safety talk and announcements. The cost to shoot is $10. Right now we can offer you coffee and donuts before we shoot, and many of us get together for Lunch immediately after. Come join us!

Badges

Shooters have asked about Paden’s Posse Badges. Here is the history of our badge and picture. The badges are handcrafted by Running Buffalo of sterling silver. Badge cost is related to current market value of silver. If you are interested in acquiring a badge, please let me know and I will start the ball rolling. As an incentive, your alias and SASS Number will be engraved on the back of the badge – Free Of Charge. The first 64 badges were numbered (on the back) and the next series will be numbered 65 forward.
